Your guide
Rich Prince — Richard Carl Peart — has been immersed in the lore of Camp X since his middle-school years.
As historian and guide, he leads every Camp X Tours by FRC experience himself: the agents and their training, the Hydra radio station, and the people of Durham Region who kept the secret. His tours are a tribute to the veterans who passed through these grounds.
In 2015 the Office of the Mayor of Oshawa issued a letter of recognition for Richard Peart’s community involvement, including his work on a project to develop the Camp X lands between Whitby and Oshawa.

The archive · STS 103
Between 1941 and 1946, a quiet stretch of Lake Ontario shoreline between Whitby and Oshawa hid Special Training School No. 103 — the first purpose-built facility of its kind in North America. These are the faces, rooms and grounds of Camp X.

The founder of Camp X
Sir William Stephenson — a Winnipeg-born fighter ace, inventor and industrialist — ran British intelligence in the Americas and created Camp X.
Sent to New York by Winston Churchill in 1940, Stephenson built British Security Coordination, the secret link between Britain and a still-neutral United States. On the Lake Ontario shore he founded Special Training School No. 103, where Allied agents learned the craft of covert war and the Hydra station carried coded traffic across the Atlantic.

Evelyn Davis (née Jamieson) joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in 1943. On 1 June 1944 she was one of three CWAC members driven to Camp X, where she worked the teletype and tape machines of the Hydra station — traffic bound for England, New York and Washington. Her own family did not know what she did until after the war.
Camp X opened on 6 December 1941 — the day before Pearl Harbor — on farmland between Whitby and Oshawa.
Its official name: Special Training School No. 103, run for Britain’s SOE by William Stephenson’s British Security Co-ordination.
The most careful estimate of agents trained here — in sabotage, codes, silent combat and covert operations.
Built by engineer Pat Bayly, the radio station carried coded Allied traffic between Ottawa, London and Washington.
First Special Service Force, 1942–1944
A joint Canadian–American commando force, trained in Montana and feared across Italy and France. German soldiers called them the Black Devils — for the blackened faces that came out of the night.
The Force did not train at Camp X, but it was born of the same wartime partnership between Canada, Britain and the United States — and its methods became the foundation of modern special forces, including Canada’s. Camp X Tours by FRC stands with the families and veterans who keep its memory alive.

The First Special Service Force Association gathered in Oshawa, August 19–22, 2026, with a memorial service, flag raising and banquet at the Oshawa Convention Centre.
